Discuss the effects of a criminal’s right to a trial by jury.
Is this a positive or negative thing? How does this affect criminals and society?
It is commonly known that in most nations, culprits who are accused of a crime have a right to claim their innocence in a court of law before they are convicted. I believe that this policy has positive virtues. Moreover, it can give normal citizens right to participate in social activities such as vote.
Firstly, the jury trials are positive because it prevents ordinary mankind from prosecuting without sins by the government. It is a well- known fact that by remaining policy of this, people can consistently monitor gigantic issues related to absurdities of laws. For example, in South Korea, after introducing the jury trials, the rate of absurdities has considerably decreased in the most court of laws. Since evidences of crime have to be shown to the court of law, the jury trials give an opportunity that proves innocence to accused people. For this reason, it is evident that the jury trials could drop the likelihood that innocent citizens could be convicted.
Moreover, the jury trials also give innumerable advantages on society because they allow citizens to have chance of being part of trials. Many experts believe that people’s attention is getting bigger about being part of social members at legal process. For example, countries that require jury trials have a higher voter turnout rate. This clearly illustrates that jury trials affect social participation of citizens. Therefore, it is undeniable that participating in legal process can have positive effects on society.
Overall, jury trials have positively affected people because they provide innocent people with chances that protect themselves from being accused, and by involving ordinary people in the legal process, they have increased social participation.
