Q. Some people believe governments should spend money in saving languages of few speakers from dying out completely. Others think this is a waste of financial resources. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
It is true that the world has seen considerable changes recently due to globalisation. One of the changes is that some languages became spoken by fewer people and in danger of being extinct. With regards to this issue, some people believe that the government should put more funds to preserve endangered languages, while others insist that it is a waste of money. This essay will discuss both points of view and my opinion on this issue.
The people who suggest language preservation maintain that since a language is a reflection of the speakers’ culture, losing a language means losing their culture. Saving cultures is important because the descendants are able to improve their sense of identity through their culture. In addition, people from different cultures can also learn from other cultures and broaden their perspective. For example, the Australian Government has been investing a considerable amount of money as a purpose of preserving Australian indigenous languages in order to save, respect and appreciate the indigenous culture.
On the other hand, some people against this idea doubt the usefulness of language preservation and argue that it is not worth spending money on saving endangered languages. They believe that keeping one common language in society is more efficient in communication-wise and cost-wise. For instance, people who speak different languages from a country’s common language will struggle with understanding the common language. Thus, the government might have to spend extra money to address this problem.
In my opinion, the benefits of preserving endangered language outweigh the importance of saving government funds. It is important to keep different cultures so that we can hand them down to future generations. Governments should introduce pertinent measures to keep endangered languages and save cultures.
