Most schools give their students grades based on their performance. Why do so many schools utilise this method of student evaluation? In what ways does this affect student?
Most schools nowadays evaluate students’ academic abilities by giving grading. They have stated that giving grades will encourage students to study hard. However, others acclaim that young people suffer from health problems by studying too much for higher grades.
To begin with, many educational experts believe that giving grades is the most effective way to encourage students to study hard. This is because young people get motivations to study when they get low marks on their test results. For instance, if a student gets grade B on a math test, this student will put more effort and time to get grade A for next exams. Students can recognize themselves which courses they should study hard to obtain better results. Thus, it is evident that giving rates is useful for students to foster their intellectual knowledge.
On the other hand, some people believe that the rating system causes many students suffer from health problems. They acclaim that the grade system is not always accurate to evaluate students’ academic performance. To be specific, some tests are very tricky, so every student get low grades rather than expectations. However, young students become discouraged and might lose confidence by low grades. Furthermore, they do not sleep enough and study until late night to get higher grades for next exams. As a result, many students appeal for depression or sleep deprivation caused by studying.
In conclusion, many schools have implemented rating system to improve students’ academic ability. However, many students go through physical and emotional difficulties in daily life because they get stressed so much. Thus, schools need to consider alternative ways for students to not feel under pressure about rating.
