Some people think that if a country is already rich, further economic development will not result in its citizens being any happier. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Many surveys show that people in poor countries are happier than those in rich countries. However, it does not mean that the poorer the countries are, the happier citizens are. Economic development affects happiness but not always in proportionate to it. I agree that further economic development will not result in its citizens being any happier and this essay will provide the reasons.
First of all, the more a country develops, the busier the society becomes. The society of rich nations is much busier and changes faster than that of poor nations. It makes people stressful and feel pressure. Also, they have to compete with their colleagues to survive. On the other hand, people in poorer nations live in uncomfortable environment rather than rich nations but they do not need to struggle to lose their jobs at company. Thus, economic development can make citizens happy to some degree but further development might make them unhappy, letting them busy and struggle to live.
Also, if people feel relaxed to live following by economic development, they start to save money and want to buy a good car and a luxury house. Many people want to be rich and compare with other people who have luxury items. It makes citizens compare with others and feel uncomfortable. On the contrary, in poor countries, it is hard for citizens to save enough money to buy luxury items so they do not need to struggle to show off their wealth.
In conclusion, people can live comfortably depending on economic development. However, further development in rich nations where people already have enough money to live might make people unhappy and even gloomy.
