There has been the attempt as to the reduction of pollution
and traffic. In this regard, it is argued that there should be government’s
policy to increase tax on petrol. This essay will support more strongly the
disadvantages of the policy such as disparity and inconvenience.
One of primary disadvantages of the policy is that there could
be severe segregation between the wealthy and the poor, which might lead to the
frequent riots against government in extreme case. For example, it is highly
likely that the poor cannot afford to purchase petrol due to the increase of
tax on petrol. This might be not only the symbol of wealth but also the cause
of tension between popularity and government. Because of this, riots and
protest against government could occur.
Developments of technology consuming petrol have played a
convenient role in our life. For instance, especially in the USA, as a result
of massive territory, many students tend to drive a car at young age in order
to go to school. In this way, the sudden outflow of money to paying high cost
of petrol might wreak havoc on student’s finance and the attendance in school;
this can be the result of high tax as they couldn’t afford to drive a car
anymore. This might contribute to low academic performance as well as inconvenience
in student’s life, which could be perceived as one of disadvantages of the increase
of tax on petrol.
In conclusion, although there might be various advantages of
increasing tax on petrol, I strongly believe that the disadvantages outweigh
the advantages in terms of segregation and inconvenience.
