The diagram shows the life cycle of the cicada which is an insect.
Overall, it is clear that there are three stages of cicada’s life cycle that live near trees over many years. Notably, the cicada spends roughly most time in the ground.
Looking at the diagram more closely, one can see that cicada eggs spend time about 2 to 7 months inside of tree branches. After that, when it becomes nymph, it lives underground and tunnels near tree roots for more than 2 years and less than 17 years. It means that the insect has most of its life time to prepare to become the cicada with living underground. After the 17-year period, it moults the old skin on the tree. During almost 20 to 150 minutes, it is transformed into the cicada. By putting its eggs in tree branches, the cycle of the insect called cicada has continued.
