It is a common belief that governments should spend funds on railways rather than roads. However, I firmly believe that governments should pay their budget more for building roads than for building railways because building traffic network mainly with roads which is essential is more cost-efficient than building that mainly with railways and roads can be utilized by more people without any limitation to vehicles or time.
To begin with, governments can construct and maintain their transportation systems cost-efficiently by building roads rather than railways. In order to make economic growth, it is important to build and keep traffic network systemically, in which resources, materials, or products can be transported and distributed from areas of their production to another places for further process or consumption. According to the recent survey, the cost of building and keeping the same length of roads in their whole operation period is nearly a third of that of railways.
On top of that, roads can be utilized for more people to move whenever they want by using more various vehicles such as cars, trucks or bicycles unlike railways. There are many constraints for using railways because only trains can pass on the railways and be used on given time due to centrally controlled system. For example, if subways operation hour is over, you can’t use them to go home, but, you should use a taxi or night bus instead.
To sum up, to build and maintain traffic infrastructure mainly with roads is more cost-efficient than with railways and usability of roads is much higher than that of railways. For these reasons, governments should spend their budget on roads more than on railways. |
