It is true that the contemporary sports industry has been
intensively supported with significant money by many governments for several
reasons. While some people consider the massive amount of investments in sports
to be unsuitable, I firmly believe that it can bring a number of benefits within
most countries.
The main reason for sponsoring sports by governments is that
it is one of the most effective ways to increase the nation’s image globally.
Especially, hosting an international sporting event such as the Olympics or the
World Cup as a great opportunity to amplify the national value and the image since
myriad people in the world pay attention to the host nation. In fact, not many
people had been as informed about South Korea except for the political tensions
relating to North Korea, but that was before South Korea hosted the Olympics in
1988 and the World Cup in 2002. The government was able to introduce positive
aspects of the country to the world by holding the events successfully.
On top of that, I think that investing in the sports
industry is justified because it will lead to a lot of other positive effects
in society. When governments provide sports programs with funding, people
become more interested in them. As this occurs, not only do sports entertain
citizens, but also, they contribute to enhance people’s health and the national
economy. For instance, ice hockey is a very popular sport in Canada and lots of
Canadians play it. By doing so, they can relieve stress from their work or
study and boost their fitness. Furthermore, many people spend money on
equipment and even on the tickets, snacks and souvenirs from ice hockey games.
All of this influences the country’s economy.
To sum up, it is apparent that the growth of the sports
industry is beneficial for the country. Therefore, it is an appropriate
decision in advocating that governments provide a budget for sports.
