The line graph shows the amount of goods
transported in the UK by four different methods (road, water, rail, and
pipeline) between 1974 and 2002.
Overall, it is clear that most frequently
used method of transport was by the road, followed by water, rail and pipeline.
Though similar amount of goods were transported initially by water and rail,
the water showed increase in amount of transport whilst the rail decreased.
Looking at the graph more closely, relatively
larger amount of goods were transported by the road throughout the years,
starting from more than 70 million tons in 1874, rising to slightly below 100
million tons in 2002. The goods transported by water had significant rise
between 1978 and 1982. Though the amount of goods remained constant below 60
million tons until 1998, it showed significant rise from then on, transporting
over 60 million tons in 2002. On the other hand, the amount of goods
transported by rail experienced steady fall from 1978. It has reached its
lowest point in 1994 with the amount below 30 million tons, however, it has
risen to the amount similar to what it had in 1974 by 2002. Finally, the amount
transported by the pipeline showed most stable and steady increase starting
from approximately 5 million tons in 1978 reaching above 20 million tons in
2002. |
