People often do not interact
with their neighbours and this is harming community building. What are the
possible causes and solutions?
As the modern society has advanced, more people do not communicate with
their neighbors compared to the past and this became a controversial topic recently.
I will discuss about the reason why people neglect neighborhood and suggest
solutions to mitigate this phenomenon.
There are numerous reasons why people do not
interact with other community members. First of all, people do not have an enough
time to wind down in the daily life. This is because many people suffer from
competition and over-work condition and it makes them to spend their free time
just for family. Secondly, the change of housing shape leads to the
break of interaction between neighbors even more seriously. For instance, the
most preferable type of housing in South Korea is an apartment which constructed with high
walls, doors and completely separated spaces. However, the structure of apartment
which is suitable to ensure a privacy for individuals prevents people to socialize with others because of the lack of shared living areas. In other
words, people do not have any time and place to communicate with neighbors.
On
the other hand, there are several actions that could alleviate the lack of
interaction between neighbors. A simple solution would be a construction of
community center in apartment and launching programmes for sports activities or
classes which might be enjoyable in free time. The community center will be a
venue to meet and share similar hobbies with members of society. A second measure
would be for the government to enforce the law which can ensure the flexible working
time. If people can achieve more time to relax, they might spend spare time
with neighbors in a community center.
In
conclusion, it is true that a busy lifestyle and the change of housing type trigger
the discontinuity among neighbors. However, I opine that it can be mitigate by launching programmes throughout the community center or guaranteeing a flexible working time
for people.
