Q) Cases bullying in school are increasing and worsening. What do you think are the causes of this? How can we tackle this issue?
In order to address the problem of school bullying, its causes should be understood clearly by school officials. To accomplish this, the most practical solution will be to relieve students’ stress that is caused by competitive atmosphere in school.
To begin with, one of the main causes of school bullying is obsession on academic grades which makes classes very competitive. This phenomenon occurs not only at school but also at home by parents, and it eventually increases overall level of social pressures. In particular, students who are in their 10’s are emotionally sensitive so that oppressed emotion can be expressed with violence towards weak peers. Interestingly enough, lots of attackers of school bullying have introvert characters at home and tend to follow what their parents say. Mostly, their parents require higher academic grades to them. As a result, paying too much attention to academic performances definitely affect negatively to students’ peer relationship.
Thus, changing the way of evaluation will be a practical solution. It is undeniable that a quantitive evaluation is more burden than a qualitative evaluation because learners will receive their results with numeral grades in the former way. Due to this, learners have to compare their marks each other, and that is a major reason of academic stress. Instead, students could be evaluated from various perspectives by the qualitative way, being respected their own characters by teachers. For instance, many Northern European countries, where have less school bullying cases, do not compare students by their grades. As a result, the way of assessment can make changes on social atmosphere.
To sum up, the cause of school bullying is competitive social
atmosphere caused by comparison of learners’ academic performances. Also, I
suggested that qualitative evaluation would relieve academic stress and make
more cooperative classes. Therefore, the causes related to the problem can
sufficiently be alleviated if people acknowledge that the educational
authorities formulate effective solutions. (322 words)
