The diagram illustrates the phases in the life of salmon, which grows up to 76 cm long.
Overall, it is evident that salmon’s life has three distinct stages. These stages revolve around river and sea and occur over many years.
Looking at the diagram more closely, one can see that the life cycles starts with eggs, and a number of salmon eggs are placed under reeds. This stage lasts for about 5 to 6 months in the upper river, where the speed of water flow is slow, also small stones prevent the eggs not to flow away. In the second stage, the eggs hatch and become 3 to 8 cm long small fishes, called fry. They move to the lower river, where the water speed gets faster and spend approximately 4 years. These 12 to 15 cm long smolts move to open sea in the third stage. The smolts live in the sea about 5 years and then they finally turn to adult salmons, which are 70 to 76 cm long fish, and they are now possible to reproduce. They come back to the upper river for laying eggs.
