Some people say that arts subjects such as painting or drawing should not be made compulsory for high school students. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
It is true that art classes such as painting or drawing are mandatory for high school students. Although some people argue that an art class can be quite useful and good for students, it seems that it definitely should not be compulsory for them.
To begin with, there is no chance to take arts classes after graduating high school. That is to say, if someone wants to learn arts after graduating high school, they have to pay for it, not for free. Furthermore, since they study hard main subjects such as math, English and history for SAT, they need to have their brain rested by taking art classes which are not important for SAT.
However,On the other hand, taking art classes can be waste of time for high school students, especially those who don’t like arts. Because preparing for SAT, they’re already running out of time. Also, they’re exhausted from studying other major subjects such as math, science and English. So for this reason, there must be some students who sleep in class. In this sense, they need self-study time instead of an art class. Therefore, students should have choices to take an art class or not. Otherwise, not only students will not focus on an art class and do other things but also they will ignore the art teacher.
In conclusion, although having a lot of benefits, art classes should not be mandatory for high school students. They should have options whether they will take an art class or not.
