It is a common belief that zoos allow a safe environment for rare animals, thereby zoos are eventually beneficial to animal protection. However, I disagree with this argument since zoos are making money by exploiting animals. On the one hand, it is true that many endangered animals need a safe environment. By staying at the zoo, numerous animals can be protected and being fed from staffs. In other words, animals are free from their predators and starving. As many species were extinct due to these reasons, zoos have the protective function. For example, Pandas are well-known endangered species. However, a zoo in Chengdu, China, took good care of Panda and the population has been increased recently. On the other hand, even though zoos can protect endangered species, I believe that the zoo is not the best choice for animals. To be honest, unlike a sanctuary, a majority of zoos have poor environments and treat an animal as a product. Sometimes they train animal compulsorily, which can cause high stress to the animals. Many animalists insist that animals are happy when they are in their own habitats. So I personally think that instead of supporting zoos, protecting animal habitats should be prioritized. To sum up, whether zoos are beneficial or not to animals is a controversial topic. While zoos can be helpful for animal protection, I think zoos are still holding many drawbacks and to some extent, it is result of human’s greed. It is unnatural to keep animal in a man-made environment.
