The pie chart below shows the main reasons why agricultural land becomes less productive. The table shows how these causes affected three regions of the world during 1990s.
The two charts give information about the reasons why agriculture lands were degraded both all over the world and in some specific regions during 1990’s
Overall, the agriculture lands were damaged the most by over-grazing, which followed by the way of deforestation. This pattern was seen in the Oceania as well, while the total land degraded in Europe, where the most of land degraded was occurred in deforestation, was bigger than Oceania.
Looking at the charts more closely, one can see that over 35% of the land became less productive due to the live stocks grazing too much around the world. The reasons of deforestation and over-cultivation made up 30% and 28% respectively.
In terms of the specific region, Europe was the most degraded regions among three regions as 23% of total land were affected by degradation. The main reason in Europe was deforestation, and over-cultivation and over-grazing were close behind at 7.7% and 5.5% respectively. Meanwhile, the portion of land which suffered from degradation in Oceania was 13%, which was resulted from the over-grazing the most at 11.3%. The figures of over-gazing in Oceania was over twice than in Europe, 5.5%. Finally, North America had the smallest land of degradation, which was caused by over-cultivation the most.
