In our society, many people contact the
other in different methods. As they encounter an individual for the first time,
some analyses them according to the first impression. On the other hand, some
do not conclude about a person’s character until they have got to know them
better. These two views have similarities but can be quite different.
In today’s society, first impression is
considered very important. People’s character is often concluded by the way
they look, the way they act and the way they dress. For example, if someone is
obese, it can be concluded that he is lazy, or if someone looks unkempt, it can
be thought that he is dirty. He might have been suffering from medical
condition where he cannot control his weight, and the other may have been
working hard and now ready to clean up, but that does not matter. Though the
first impression in some settings such as job interviews or a date, in other
settings, a person’s real character is often distorted by it.
In contrast, there are some people who
think a person should not be judged by the first look. They focus more on one’s
background rather than what they can see in front. As they get to know each other
more, true character is revealed and better relationship can be established
between two individuals. For example, I had a friend who is overweight,
stutters when he speaks and does not dress neatly when going to places. My
first impression of him was not great, but as I got to know him, I realized how
loving, friendly, and truthful he is and later became best friends. Despite the
positive side, it also has a down side. In a lifetime, not every relationship
is long, and it is an undeniable fact that the first impression has to take
part in some relationships.
In conclusion, first view concludes about a
person’s character by the first impression missing out on true relationship
while the other view argues first impression does not define a person’s character
though it takes time. At the end, both views share similarities in terms of
establishing relationship with a person who they meet for the first time.
