It is true that genetic engineering technology for crops has been developed to increase the produce rate of crops. While some people believe that it is necessary for crops to be modified to supply sufficient food to entire human race, I do not agree with the idea because I think that genetically modified plants can have a negative effect on our environment.
Some people argue that crops that we eat on a daily basis should be genetically modified to get a higher yield in agriculture. By doing so, we would tackle food shortage problems and it would play a huge role on the relief of famine. For example, there is a genetically modified corn and it produce something that act like a pesticide. That is because humans inserted certain gene codes for the plant to create it. Thanks to these genes, the corns can grow without being attacked by insects, and this would allow them to flourish.
On the other hand, there are opponents who believe that it is necessary to do research in depth because it can unexpectedly cause harm to our environment since none of us is fully aware of the potential effects of modifying genes of crops. I completely agree with them and one possible consequence would be that those genetically modified plants may interfere the ecosystem that they belong to. For example, the corn mentioned above may eradicate some insects’ species, and that can result in the massive death of their predators like birds and frogs.
In conclusion, it is obvious that genetically modified crops can contribute to solving the food shortages worldwide, but I believe that we should do more research to figure out whether they have negative influences on our environment.
