Businesses emphasize slight changes or some added features when they promote their products these days, For instance, Apple highlights a slightly faster CPU or a slightly better camera when they release their cellphones or computer devices. Tefal, the french kitchenware manufacturer focuses on the upgraded copper coating of their frying pans, comparing to their previous ones. Those changes might not be recognizable for us consumers, but corporations are keep trying to make their products more appealing and more convincing. Main reason for these phenomena is that people, potential consumers from the perspective of businesses, already almost have what they see in the advertisements. They already have smartphones, other electronic devices, household appliances, cars. They don't have a desire to buy a new product unless the ones they possess are broken or too old to function. So, businesses are trying to stimulate the desire by emphasizing some parts of their products. In addition, there was not a single invention or a product on the market that dramatically improved people’s daily life in last 10 years. Except for the introduction of smartphones in late 2000s, people are seeing the same products that only have changes in the design or a little improvement. So, even for corporations, the only way to make their product more appealing, and to make more profit is emphasizing some parts that are new. I personally believe that this is a negative development. Because people get deluded by those advertisements and keep buying new things that they do not even need. Not only this is an irrational consumption, but this causes environmental problem since it makes more and more wastes. However, I also think this is inevitable in this modern world. In this world of capitalism, when the consumption is hesitated, demand for the production slowly declines. Declined production causes job losses, consequently leads to the vicious circle of poverty. So, even though I think it is not beneficial, it should, and will continue. |
