Recently, the criteria of when schools choose
students have been a subject of heated debate. It is considered by some that
schools should select pupils by their academic performance, while there are
others who believe that educating students who have different capabilities
together is much more important. While academic excellence should be
prioritized in schools, I personally believe that schools have to help students
to be grown into well-balanced adults.
On the one hand, some people insist that schools should
select pupils based on academic perspectives because this is one of the
most equitable ways and because this can increase the motivation and synergy
effect between students. With regard to fairness, if schools choose students by
other individual abilities, it can make it difficult for schools to have
unbiased examination procedures. Under the academic criteria, students can be selected
just by the exam which is one of the handiest and fairest methods. When smart
students are gathered in a school, this can also provide another benefit as students
can be motivated by other intelligent classmates, increasing the synergy
between them. This allows them to get a good job or succeed in our society.
On the other hand, some critics, including me, point
out that schools should consider other capabilities such as music, art, and
sports when they choose pupils. This is because our society is becoming more
and more complicated and complex, and it is requiring people who have different
backgrounds. When schools choose students according to a wide range of
capabilities, it would be easier that students help each other, leading them to
more well-rounded adults. Another benefit of this approach is that this
can be beneficial to less intelligent students. If schools select pupils just by
academic perspectives, students, who have less smart but need regular education
more, might not have an opportunity to enroll in schools.
In my opinion, while schools should consider academic
performance on a preferential basis when they select pupils, I believe that diverse
skills and abilities should not be overlooked, and these criteria should be
used in a holistic way. |
