A human's role as a driver will become obsolete in coming times once driverless vehicles become available. There are merits and demerit, and I opine that the benefits override its drawbacks.
To begin with, there are some disadvantages of autonomous vehicles. First and foremost, there is possibility of unemployment. There are many people who make their living through driving, such as taxi, bus or cargo drivers. Once self-driving cars become common and infiltrate the daily lives of people, the people will start to lose jobs, which will have social and economic impacts. Secondly, this kind of technology is susceptible to hacking. If vehicles become completely autonomous, there is an issue of cyber security. If there are any breaches in the system, hacking will become a much more serious issue than it is now as people's lives will be directly linked to it. Therefore, autonomous cars can cause more social issues.
However, not all aspects of trend are detrimental. First of all, autonomous cars can eliminate human errors. As the cars become automated, there will be no need for humans to drive cars anymore, which will reduce the number of accidents that are caused due to human errors, such as tiredness or driving under the influence. In addition, it will allow less mobile people to travel independently. There are some members of society, such as disabled and elderly people, who usually cannot travel on their own, to move around freely without having to wait for others' help or special vehicles. This would dramatically the quality of life for disadvantaged people. Thus, driverless cars will make society more harmonies.
To sum up, although there are drawbacks, I opine that the development is mainly beneficial. Therefore, the society should take advantages of the upcoming occurrence and prepare for it.
