It is easy to
find children who spend most of their time on their smart devices, as technologies
are developed. There are several reasons for this situation, and I think this
is a negative development.
Children can use
smartphones in various ways and for numerous purposes because smartphones have
diverse functions. First, they can socialize with new friends and have a fun
form being a friend who cannot be met in person. For example, if they use
social media platform, such as Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter, they can make a
new friend without any restriction of distance. They can meet a friend who has
common interest and similar personality but live far from home. This kind of making
a new friend might be easier and more comfortable and pleasant than a
traditional way to make a new friend. Moreover, the way to find information has
changed from analog way to digital way, as technologies are improved. informative
function of smartphones that make those kind of process possible can be other
reason for overuse. For instance, when we learn foreign language, we find words
from digital or web dictionary using smartphones not a paper dictionary. As this
example, it is much easier to find and learn new knowledge using smart devices.
Admittedly, one
might argue that smartphones can be positive role for children because of those
reasons I mentioned above. However, there are some negative points people have
to be seriously considering in children’s overuse of smartphones. First,
smartphones can harm children’s health and physical development. Children have
to exercise for their physical development, but they can stay in one pose for long
time if they concentrate on their smartphones. For example, overuse of smartphones
in one pose can cause pain of children’s neck and shoulder. Secondly, overuse
of smartphones can negatively affect mental health of children. For example,
they can compare their daily lives with the best moments of other friends by watching
their posts on social media platforms. They can be depressed by comparing, if
they do not make positive and firm self esteem and ego.
As I mentioned above,
there are many reasons for children’s overuse of smartphones, such as getting
information or making friends. Therefore, it might have some positive points. However,
it can be more easy for overuse of smartphones to negatively influence
children. |
