About
People always ask me, "What is the best way to become fluent in English?" I believe it is through reading. Reading improves your vocabulary and comprehension and enlightens and gives knowledge. Reading critically causes you to question and develop discernment and judgment. Reading interpretively broadens your understanding of yourself and the world.
Reading books show you how to write.
Once you are a good reader, you become a good writer and a good thinker, and perhaps even a creative one.
My philosophy is that studying solely for tests tests you only on what you know already whereas reading is education and learning new things. Therefore, if you could read, discuss, and write about the books we read in my Reading Literature class, tests such as the New SAT and TOEFL become easy.
That said, if you do not have enough time to read all those books, you need to focus on applying strategies (test taking skills) and rapidly absorbing vocabulary and knowing the skills specific to each test. The new SAT I and II, AP English Literature and Language, and TOEFL courses all focus on these areas, although if given the time, it is best to take a combination of the
Reading and test prep classes.
