The University of Georgia School of Law is a public law school in Athens. Law students who wish to broaden their education can do so in three ways: through elective courses, joint degrees, and concurrent enrollment in other departments at the University of Georgia. Joint degree programs include a J.D./M.B.A. through the Terry College of Business and a J.D./M.Ed. in Sports Studies for future sports lawyers offered through the College of Education. Concurrent enrollment options, which allow students to earn another degree in their second and third years of law school, are offered through the University of Georgia’s other 15 schools and colleges.
Global opportunities are also a focus of the law school, including study abroad programs, work abroad programs, and global initiatives. Students can spend a school break abroad through the Georgia Law Summer Program in China; the Georgia Law Summer Program in Brussels & Geneva; the Georgia Law at the University of Oxford program; or through a global internship. The Georgia School of Law also runs the Dean Rusk Center for International, Comparative and Graduate Legal Studies, a hub of international law research, internship placements, and global outreach projects. Nearly a quarter of first year students take part in summer study abroad programs and internship opportunities.
There are more than 40 student organizations to join, including the Rural South Law Society, for students who wish to practice in rural areas, and the Student Animal Legal Defense Fund, which advocates for improvements to federal and state animal laws. The school also has several legal journals: the Georgia Law Review, the Georgia Journal of International & Comparative Law, and the Journal of Intellectual Property Law. On-campus housing is available, but most law students opt for private housing.
Notable alumni of Georgia Law include Kenneth Gross, Jr., U.S. ambassador to Tajikistan, and Samuel Matchett, partner and chair of the diversity committee at King & Spalding.
