CV

구글에 "academic CV" 또는 "phd application CV"라고 검색하면 다양한 양식을 확인할 수 있고, 저 같은 경우는 다양한 대학에 컨택하면서 각 랩실에 소속되어 있는 학생들의 공개된 CV 양식을 가장 많이 참고하였습니다. 

CV를 만들 때 개인적으로 중요하다고 생각하는 것은 깔끔하고 가독성 좋은 양식과 action verb라고 생각합니다. 특히 action verb는 진행한 연구들에 대해 CV에서 설명할 때 중요한 것 같은데요. 이 역시 구글에 "CV action verb"라고 검색하시면 좋은 내용을 많이 확인하실 수 있습니다. 

SOP

SOP 작성할 때는 구글링도 많이 했지만, 네이버 블로그에 다양한 PhD SOP 글들을 참고했습니다. 따로 외부 업체에 검토는 안 받고, Grammarly랑 ChatGPT 활용해서 손 보았습니다. 

참고가 되실까하여 제가 작성한 template을 공유합니다. 자세한 내용을 지우다 보니 약간 이해가 안되는 부분이 있을 수 있는 점 양해 부탁드리며, 잘 쓴 SOP는 아니니 문단별 구성만 참고하시고, 여러 SOP 예시도 함께 확인하는 것을 추천드립니다.

My research interests lie at the [research interest]. My primary research question is: [research question]. To pursue this question, I aim to investigate [research topic, method - summary]. OSU - First unofficial interview 8/5 → official interview 12/17 

7월에 교수님께 컨택한 후, 10월 1일 원서 마감 전까지 총 세 차례 미팅을 가졌습니다. 비공식 미팅에서는 석사 과정동안 진행한 연구와 앞으로의 연구 계획에 대해 이야기를 나누었고, 공식 미팅에서는 potential PI 없이 학과 내 다른 교수님들과 면접을 진행했습니다. 공식 미팅 전에 학과 담당자로부터 "총 10개의 질문이 있으며, 각각 팀워크, 연구 윤리, 리더십과 같은 다양한 주제를 다룰 것"이라는 안내를 받았지만, 실제 면접에서는 연구 윤리와 협동심에 대한 질문만 이어져 예상과 달라 당황스러웠습니다. 예를 들어, "랩실 동료가 연구 데이터를 조작하는 것을 목격했다. 두 사람에게만 이 사실을 알릴 수 있다면 누구에게 이야기하겠는가?" 같은 질문을 받았습니다. 공식 어드미션은 12월 말에 받았습니다.

PSU - First unofficial interview 8/20 → official interview 1/15

다른 연구실 교수님들보다 말수가 적은 편이셨지만, 미팅이 시작되자마자 제가 진행했던 연구들에 대해 궁금한 점을 질문하셨고, 앞으로 제가 가지고 있는 technique을 활용해 어떤 연구를 하면 좋을지에 대해 논의했습니다. 공식 면접은 두 분의 교수님이 추가로 참여해 총 세 분과 함께 진행되었습니다. 새롭게 만난 교수님들 중 한 분은 제가 Penn State에 진학할 경우 공동 PI가 될 예정이었으며, 비공식 미팅과 마찬가지로 연구 방법에 대한 질문이 주를 이루었습니다. 이 외에도 박사 과정 동안 연구 대상이 인간이 아닌 다른 주제로 확장될 가능성에 대해 질문하며, 연구 접근 방식에서 얼마나 열린 태도를 가지고 있는지 확인하는 듯했습니다. PSU는 아직 결과가 나오지 않았지, 합격하더라도 최종적으로는 decline할 것 같습니다. 

UB - First unofficial interview 9/5, NO official interview

OSU랑 마찬가지로 제 연구를 소개하는 시간을 한 30분 가지고, 교수님께 어떤 연구를 진행하시는지, Buffalo에서의 삶은 어떤지 수다 떨었습니다. 학부 인턴 랩 교수님과 어느 정도 아는 사이셔서 비교적 편한 분위기로 인터뷰가 진행되었던 것 같습니다. 추가적인 면접이 있을 것 같았는데 공식 면접은 따로 없었고 12월 1일에 원서 접수하고 12월 말에 unofficial, 1월 말에 official admission을 받았습니다. 

인류학과뿐만 아니라 의대와 공대까지 포함해 약 30곳에 컨택을 하느라 입시 초반이 가장 큰 스트레스였습니다. 그중에서도 제 research aim과 fit하고, 컨택에 대한 합격 수준으로 긍정적이었던 세 곳을 최종적으로 선택해 지원했습니다. 주변에서는 지원 학교 수가 너무 적다고 걱정하기도 했지만, 지금 돌아보면 선택과 집중을 할 수 있어 좋은 결정이었다고 생각합니다.

저는 학부에서 생물인류학과 전혀 관련 없는 전공을 공부했고, 관련 수업도 들어본 적이 없었습니다. 브랜드 마케터로 일하던 중 우연히 생물인류학 관련 책을 접하게 되었고, 관심이 생겨 연구하시는 교수님께 직접 연락을 드린 후 연구실 인턴으로 연구를 시작했습니다. 이후 석사 과정까지 3년간 연구를 이어오면서 힘든 순간도 많았지만, "잘해야 한다"는 부담감보다는 연구 자체가 즐거워 여기까지 올 수 있었던 것 같습니다. 혹시 학부 전공과 다른 분야로 연구의 길을 고민하는 분들이 있다면, 제 경험이 작은 용기가 되었으면 좋겠습니다.
