The fact that finding something new led me to the path of the scientist. Among them, it was more attractive to me to reveal the mysteries of living things. The fact that it is a creature from a simple organism made me even more surprised. After I enter the K University, I learned a broad range of knowledge about life sciences. There were many interesting disciplines, but environmental ecology was one of the motivating factors to explore more deeply among various life science fields. The reason why I interested in ecology is that the change in the biosphere due to environmental changes is the biggest problem currently underway.
After completing the first year of university, two years of military service was done at the West Sea of Korea. There, I was able to meet many fishers, and I found that fisher's net had more starfish and jellyfish than fish. This incident has led to an interest in rapidly changing marine ecosystems, and I have learned through articles and papers that there have been many changes in the ocean around Korea.
After two years of military service, I returned to university and participated in the summer research camp offered by the department during summer vacation in 2015. I participated in the environmental ecology laboratory of Professor Lee as a research assistant. The purpose of taking part in the camp was that I wondered what procedure was used to conduct the experiment and what analysis tools were used. During this period, I learned that statistical methods are used to analyze large amounts of data in ecological research. Also, I realized that using a computer program can efficiently analyze a large amount of data and that basic coding techniques can make research more efficient.
I could not learn statistics and computer programming in my departmental education programs, so I had to find a way to learn from other methods. In the meantime, I got the information that Professor Kim of K University Department of Medicine analyzed microarray data using R program. After I had contacted the professor, I got accepted and joined his project in February 2016. I knew the biological facts, but since the R program and statistics were unfamiliar areas, I learned through his teaching and internet lecture, coursera. During this period, I analyzed the microarray metadata of cancer patients uploaded to the HGNC site through the R program and investigated the relationship between specific traits and gene groups. While working in the lab until January 2017, I learned about basic statistical analysis methods and how to use the R program. I am sure that the R programs and statistics I have learned will be of great help in studying marine biology in the future.
After completing my master 's degree, I would like to continue my studies on marine ecology and obtain a doctorate. Through this degree, I hope that I will be able to give appropriate advice to governments or businesses on marine ecosystem issues. Overfishing and climate change cause Many of the marine ecosystem problems currently occurring. For example, in the 1970s, the destruction of marine ecosystems by overfishing in the apo-island of the Philippines drove them into poverty. Based on research by scientists, fish habitat protection and regulation of overfishing was able to restore the marine ecosystem of the apo-island. As in the case above, through my research, I want to create a society where people can live better while protecting the environment.
