Job Title:
PhD Positions in Mechanical Engineering Department
Institution:
University of Illinois
Chicago, IL
United States
Position Start Date:
Available Immediately
The Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department (MIE) at University of Illinois-Chicago is seeking
applications for two highly motivated PhD students to conduct research in the area of complex fluid
mechanics and fluid dynamics.
These include: 1) Develop an analytical model which describes the suspension flows over porous surfaces,
2) Linearly perturb the equations using spectral methods, 3) design innovative experimental setups, and
4) experimentally validate the models using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and particle image
velocimetry (PIV) measurements.
The positions will start either in Spring 2019 or Fall 2019.
Applicants are expected to have a strong foundation in Fluid mechanics and Fluid dynamics. Candidates
with experience on suspension flows as well as flow in porous media are preferred. MATLAB and Machine
shop experience are a plus. Excellent communication and written skills are required along with
demonstrated success in previous academic research. The postdoctoral fellow must have a PhD in an
engineering discipline, good mechanical design skills, and experience in technologies such as MRI, and
PIV. Additionally, the selected candidate will be expected to oversee undergraduate and master students,
collaborate with the team members, write reports and publish peer-reviewed journal articles.
The appointment includes a stipend, full tuition, and benefits. Outstanding candidates are invited to submit
a letter of application detailing their relevant background, providing the names and e-mail addresses of at
least three references, a CV, and copies of relevant reprints and pre-prints. Send the application (single
PDF file) to Dr. Parisa Mirbod (pmirbod@uic.edu). Send email to Dr. Parisa Mirbod for more information
about the research program.
