People in general instinctively strive to reach into a place called success during the course of thier lives, and there have been almost incessant talks on how one can indeed lead a successful life. Along the same line, in a society which buzzes with the constant influx of technologies and information, it goes without saying specialists and experts are demanded in many different fields. Consistent with this, being successful in life has become synonymous with being an expert in one's field. This is why many individuals decide to pursue post secondary education for it provides indivudials with essential knowledge to be a professional in one's chosen field, and gives an edge to those who have gained a diploma by means of establishing thier credentials.
During 12 years of compulsory education, individuals are given an opportunity to explore various fields of studies and to plan their future. Often time, their blueprints in life coincide with the need to be "well educated" through universities and colleges, which is why more and more people are pursuing education beyond high school. To illustrate, a person, who finds his or her interest in medical science, and wants to become a doctor, must attend a university and a graduate school to be qualified to realize his or her dream. This is because today's society stipulates the proficiency in individuals and individuals cannot manage expansive amount of knowledge without the help of professionals. Thus, by attending a post secondary education, one can be provided with experts who will help him or her to master one's field.
As well, a university or a college degree help graduates establish their social status within society when they finally go out into the real world. To expound on this, each individual has to go through a highly selective process called admissions when they pursue post secondary education. Not only this, but they also have to prove their competency through constant evaluations and projects during the course of their univerisity life, and only those who are acknowledged to possess essential faculties and abilities can graduate from universities and colleges. Therefore, people as a whole cannot but respect graduates, who have passed highly selective process, as elites of the society and this acknowledgement from others certainly makes one's process of adjusting to one's society easier. In other words, by equipping graduates with credentials called a degree, universities and colleges are in effect providing the ground to set up their social standing. |
