▶ Your Answer :
Undoubtedly, teaching methods play a significant role in students'
daily lives in many places where they both study and work. Some people might
argue that teachers should give their students homework every day, while others
would not agree. Both sides may have their own reasons for their
ideas. If I were asked to choose one, I would say that teachers should require
their students to do everyday homework, because it benefits students in many
ways. There are several reasons for my choice.
First
of all, when students do homework everyday, they can improve their academic
performances. Doing
everyday homework requires them to be diligent, passionate and
self-disciplined. When these personal traits are well developed, it is likely
to bring a better result in school. For example, my youngest brother did poorly
in high school. He was distracted easily, procrastinated and acted on impulse.
Moreover, he often skipped classes and even failed math and science. However,
he changed little by little after his English teacher asked her students to memorize
twenty English
words a day. He realized that his active participation helped him complete his
homework quickly, while his laziness negatively affected it. Thanks to the
assignment that his English teacher required, he maintained good
behavior by raising his grades. He showed characteristics of a longer attention
span, a stronger passion in his tasks and a better ability to delay
gratification. He exceled throughout high school, and received straight A's in
his classes. Without his English teacher, he would have fallen behind.
In
addition, students can develop a sense of achievement by doing everyday
homework. It helps students enhance their knowledge, and thus be confident
themselves. This is likely to prevent them from feeling inferior to others. For
instance, when my older sister was in high school, she often felt depressed,
thinking that her life had become an exhausting routine. To survive in a
competitive world, she spent all day studying academic subjects, hoping that
she could outdo others. Although she made a constant effort, it was not easy
because many people around her were working as hard as she was. Fortunately,
she made her life more meaningful, after her math teacher required his students
to solve challenging math problems everyday as homework. By solving math
problems every day, she could enhance her mathematic skills, and win the
mathematic contests. Moreover, she was able to see positive results she
contributed to. Many people around her started to respect her, leading her to
be optimistic, strong and confident. Without the assignments that her math
teacher required, she would not have been able to make her life meaningful.
All
in all, I strongly believe that the advantages of doing homework far outweigh
disadvantages of it for the reasons I mentioned above. In this regard, the
importance of doing homework cannot be underestimated.
