School is where children learn how to live for the rest of their lives. By learning math, history, literary, and science, children get knowledge about how to interact with each other, solve problems, and why some phenomenon occur. One major subject to the young students is art or music. Most school curriculums include art and music as an obligatory subject. However, I oppose to this practice in learning because of the following reasons. To begin with, art and music classes are simply boring to most of the students. This is because either the curriculums of the courses are tedious or students are not interested in these subjects. The problem in the curriculums usually occurs because they are focused on the theories not activities. For example, when I was in elementary school, my classmates had to go through the whole history of the art movements prior to the real participations involving drawing, painting and making clay arts. Sitting on the chair while listening to what motivated Renaissance movement was rather boring to the kids of seven to ten. Even bigger problem was that the time of these lecture courses were mostly much longer than the time students could actually put their hands on. In addition to this, most of my classmates did not concentrate to the classes because they were not intrigued by art and music. They were usually more interested in practical learning like reading novels and solving mathematical problems. As the youth believe that art and music are tedious, they should not be considered as mandatory subjects. On top of that, it is absurd to obligate art and music classes as they should focus on the freedom of expression and creativity. What would all art mean when they are mandatory? Art and music are the subject of the will of people to create something meaningful. Forcing the students to create a certain kind of drawing or a short passage of music is against what is truly art. This is also severed by the fact that teachers usually do not evaluate students on their creativity but mark their grades based on how well they performed on the given task. For instance, one of my classmates had a huge passion on drawing and painting portraits. She also had a talent to it; Her drawings were really creative. However, she ended up getting lowest grade among the class though she was the best artist in the class. This is because the task she was given to complete did not focus on the creativity. The task forced the students to follow the certain type of painting technique which she could not apply well. As a result, the education in art discouraged her to become an artist instead of supporting her dream. Thus, mandatory art and music class can not convey what is most important in these subjects. In conclusion, I believe that art and music classes should not be mandatory to the children; Most of the students find the topic to be boring and will not devote themselves full to it. In addition to that, mandatory classes in these subjects are not able to transfer the true meanings in art and music. Students who enjoy spending their time in art and music should be encouraged in other ways rather than forcing them to waste certain amount of time in school. It should be their free will to create and accomplish. |
