There might be
some people who believe that teachers should not provide their students with
their opinions on social and political issues in class. However, I personally disagree
with the above idea for two subsequent reasons. First, the opinions of teachers
can give a chance for students to widen their thoughts. Second, they can also help
the students to increase attention to social issues.
To begin with, teachers’
opinions on social and political issues can offer a chance for students to widen
their perspective. As students can be exposed to ideas which are different from
theirs, they can prevent their stereotype from being made. That is, students
can widen their viewpoint by learning other thoughts on the issues. For instance,
there is a study conducted by Yonsei University to determine whether teachers’ opinions
could affect students’ mindset on social and political issues. The researchers
found that students who were exposed to them could make various and creative
ideas on the issues, and they even had generous attitude on debates in class
compared to other students who were not. This study proves that students can
widen their perspective on issues when teachers suggest their opinions on issues
to their students.
On
top of that, it can be a great opportunity for teachers to make students improve
their attention on social issues. Students nowadays do not really have high
attention on social issues because various amusements have appeared such as
SNS, computer games. Thus, if teachers make students remind of social issues by
offering their opinions on the issues, it can be a catalyst for students to
grow their attention on issues. Let me bring up my personal story as an example.
When I was in high school, my teacher gave several opinions on social issues in
our class. Thanks to him, I started to grow my attention on social issues and make
my own opinion on them. As a result, I was able to present my own ideas on
issues in class and get good grade on several interviews. Compared to this, when
I was in middle school, I did not really have many ideas about issues. Additionally,
my teacher at that time did not want to talk about social issues, so I could
not have any opportunities to think about social issues actively.
In
conclusion, teachers who give their opinions on social and political issues to
their students can be helpful because students can widen their viewpoints and grow
their attention on the issues thanks to them. In this regard, I firmly believe
that it is fine for students to be exposed to teachers’ opinions on social and
political issues in class.
