There might be some people who believe that the parents today have better understanding of their children than those of 50 years ago. However, I personally disagree with the above idea for the two subsequent reasons. First, today’s children have no time to talk with their parents. Second, parents are not used to use modern technology that their children use very often.
To begin with, children have less time to talk to their parents than those of 50 years ago. These days children are extremely busy with school work, private classes and extracurricular activities, and they spend most of their free time on doing homework or reviewing academic materials. Thus, parents today rarely talk with their children and do not have a chance to learn about their minds. According to a recent study conducted by the National Education Institutes, the average children today spend less than 30 minutes talking to their parents per week. This is due to the fact that they are occupied with school, academic materials and a wide range of activities, which also are related to school work. However, 50 years ago most children spent more than 7 hours on interacting with their parents per week. This is because they came back home right after school, and spent most of their time with their parents at home. This clearly shows that today’s busy lifestyle deters children from having time with their parents, which makes it more difficult for them to understand their children.
On top of that, today’s parents are not familiar with new technologies. Modern technology have made it more difficult for parents to interact with their children. Over the past few decades, a wide range of telecommunication means such as SNS and smart phone applications have been introduced, all of which children use much more than their parents do. This have made the generation gap between parents and their children because most parents do not know how to use it. However, 50 years ago, there were not such options so it was much easier for them to communicate with their children. Let me bring up my personal experience as an example. I use Twitter all the time to be in touch with my friends but my mother usually complains why I use it so often. She never understand how Twitter helps me not only to be up-to-date with current trends, but also to communicate with my friends. However, surely there were such things 50 years ago, which means children had more chance to interact and to be close with their parents at the time.
To sum up, today’s parents have no opportunity to talk with their children, and even they do not know how to use new technologies that their children use very often. In this regard, I firmly believe that parents today understand their children far less than those of 50 years ago.
