▶ Your Answer :
Some people think that understanding of the
past is not necessary to overcome the future or current challenges we confront.
However, in my opinion, we can prevent repeating mistakes and anticipate future
problems by learning about the past.
First, comprehending the past leads people not
to repeat the same mistakes. This is because they can figure out the reasons of
failure from the past. Earthquakes can be a good example of this. There are
repeated earthquakes in Japan. These earthquakes have killed thousands of
people by breaking down many buildings and occurring tsunami in the past. So,
Japanese people have conceived many measures to reduce the damages from
earthquakes. They have developed a highly advanced tsunami warning systems so
that people could evacuate from the dangerous areas as soon as possible.
Moreover, they have invented an earthquake-resistant design for skyscrapers to
prevent a tremendous loss of lives by collapse of buildings. Japanese people
have reduced the damage caused by an earthquake as analyzing their weak points against
the natural disaster in the past.
Second, people can expect problems that might occur
in the future. They can be well-prepared for the situations and solve the
problems properly by understanding the past. For example, when I was in
college, my father told me that it is very difficult to get a job right after
the graduation from the college. This is because companies require many career
experiences from their future employees. However, the applicants who graduated
from university not too long ago do not have many experiences. So, I planned to
apply for internships as many as possible during the summer and winter vacations
and I could have a lot of experience before the graduation. By listening to my
father’s experience in the past, I could be well-prepared for hunting a job and
I was hired soon after the graduation from college.
Taking
the prevention of repeated mistakes and the anticipation of problems in the
future into consideration, the advantages of comprehending the past far
outweigh the disadvantages of it. In this regard, I firmly believe that understanding
of the past is quite advantageous for people to overcome the challenges facing
now and in the future.
