▶ Your Answer :
There has always been controversy
surrounding the issue of whether or not people should have a variety of jobs
before settling a long-term occupation. Adults, in many cases, advise young
generation to stick to one field and carry on their job for a long time. However,
trying different jobs is essential part in one’s life due to following reasons:
broadened perspectives and increased life span.
First and foremost, people should experience
a wide range of jobs to widen their perspectives. What I mean is, it is not
enough to have a single job to understand this complex world. It is admittedly
true that people, committing their most of time into a single task, can be a
specialist in their fields, but they would narrow down their view to understand
the rest parts of the world. The story of my father shows this case to be true.
My father, who has been engaged in the publishing industry for 35 years,
recently retired from his job. He used to be proud of himself because he
thought he knew everything about books and it is true that he is one of the
best experts in the industry. However, people who were close to him evaluated
him as arrogant and know-it-all type because he overlooked and underappreciated
the talents of other people. He never had a job in different industries, and
thus, he never understood the joy and sorrow of other people who have different
jobs. The narrowed sight makes him as a person who is condescending thereby easily
ignoring the story of others. Hence, one should experience different jobs
before being a specialist in one field to understand other world by deepening
the perspective.
Furthermore, engaging in a
long-time job is almost impossible in modern era because people, nowadays, have
a longer expected life span than in the past. Previously, the average life span
was at most 70 so people have a very limited of time after they step out of
their jobs. However, many people now live much longer, almost they become 100.
Those phenomenon indicates that people, even after they retire from their
long-time careers, should get another job. This is illustrated by a recent
research conducted by Korean Health Association studying the lives of people after
resigning their occupations. Findings show that people who have a variety of
job experiences are more easily get another job after they retired. On the
other hand, people who have a limited experience by only engaging in their own fields
struggle to start a new work life because they lack of other skills and
employers think that it is already late for seniors to be proficient at another
area. Therefore, people should go through different job experiences before they
decide their long-term career to prepare for longer life after they retire. |
