Some people
might argue that the success of group work is not affected by the criticism.
However, I personally believe that people who do not accept criticism cannot
get good results at working in a group. There are two reasons. First, the
attitude, not accepting criticism, can bring about discord in a group. Second,
taking the criticisms is related to the performance of group working.
First of all,
the criticism is usually originated from disagreement, dissatisfaction, and the
need to be refined. If it is not accepted, a person who criticizes can feel
that the receiver ignored his or her opinion. Therefore, it will develop into a
trouble in a group so that the group project cannot progress well. I will talk
about my story as an example. Last semester, I actually had to attend group
working in order to complete a biology course. One of my team members always
assert a theory not related to our topic. Thus, as the leader of group, I
continuously criticize his assertion, but he did not accept my criticism. Eventually,
I was very angry due to his attitude and we had a quarrel. As a result, we did
not complete the project and I had to re-take the course.
On top of that,
the contents of criticism might be the weak point of the receiver. If the
receiver does not recognize his or her weakness, he or she cannot overcome it.
Thus, his or her performance cannot be improved. To make matters worse, this
ignorance of only one person can cause negative effect on the performance of
the entire group. For example, there was a survey conducted by a group of
education majors with 200 university students as respondents. The purpose of
the survey was to understand their thoughts about criticism in a group work. An
overwhelming 85% of respondents replied that they could overcome their weak
point by receiving teammates’ criticism. Also, they could display their
excellent performance. This survey demonstrates that the importance of
acceptance of criticism in a group working.
To sum up,
taking the occurrence of discord and the negative performance caused by one’s
ignorance of criticism into consideration, people who ignore criticism will
fail to develop the group working. Therefore, I firmly believe that it is
essential to take the criticism in a group project.
