Some people take it for granted that
providing living quarters is a more practical way to help the local people than
spending money protecting old building. However, in my opinion, spending input
to protect historically monumental buildings is much better for the local
society. The underlying logic behind this is that historic structures can help
expand student’s horizon and improve the local economy.
First of all, historical buildings
play an important role in broadening student’s perspectives. This is mainly
because students can be exposed to the fields and materials that they are unfamiliar
with, while they are enjoying and watching the historically important
structures. Also, after watching the building, they can socialize and share
their opinions with others who have different and various view. Consequently,
students can take a quantum leap in intellectual growth thanks to the historical
buildings. From or my experience, when I was in
college, I often spent my spare time in Gyeongbok-gung palace, the oldest
Korean traditional palace, which has been well preserved under the Government’s
strict management. As a result, I could learn about a wide variety of unique
traditional cultures such as house, clothes, and so on. This was because I
could watch the ancestor’s life style up close and share a lot of information
about tradition with docents who had different perspectives.
Moreover, traditional buildings will
improve the economic situation of the town. The fundamental reason is that it will
attract tons of thousands of people to a community. As a result, local businesses
such as restaurants, snack shops, and souvenir shops will have more and more
customers. On top of that, a number of jobs related to the stores will be created. From or my experience, the town I lived in
suffered from the economic recession. To cope with the crisis, the Government restored
and redesigned the abandoned cultural heritage site to change this place into an
attraction. As a result, this revitalized the local economy by providing
numerous job opportunities ranging from ticket sellers to parking attendants,
and bringing more profits to stores near the site. In addition, several
investors bought buildings and started family restaurants and shopping centers
because the town became economically promising.
In conclusion, I firmly believe that expending
money to manage historic structures is much more beneficial than just building
new apartments. The reason is that it is helpful to broaden perspectives and
boost the economy of country or town.
