▶ Your Answer :
According to the reading passage, Portrait of an Elderly Woman in a White Bonnet is not worked by Rembrandt for three reasons. In contrast, the lecturer claims that the painting is obviously done by Rembrandt with three explanations.
First, the writer suggests that the painting is inconsistent about the clothes. Rembrandt is well-known as a detail painter so if he had painted the portrait, he would have not missed it. But, in the lecture, it turned out to that the cloth of the painting was drawn after a hundred year the original painting had been drawn. The x-ray inspection found out the difference between two clothing and it must have been drawn by someone who wanted to increase the value of the painting.
Next, the reading passage mentions that there is a mistake in depiction the light and shadow. Rembrandt who was very good at painting light and shadow might not drew it because it has a significant error of shadow. However, the speaker asserts that the woman in the original painting wore a light color cloth. It made a reflection of light and it did not make shadow on her face. So Rembrandt draw the right one.
Last, the writer contends that the painting was worked by someone else because the wood panel of the painting was glued with several wood pieces. Rembrandt had never used a panel glued together like the painting. But, the lecturer points out that the wood panel was enlarged by someone who wanted to make it look more valuable. Furthermore, the panel is made from the same wood which Rembrandt used in other paintings. |
