▶ Your Answer :
There is some discrepancy over whether or not companies or schools should have a dress code. Some people might believe that companies or schools should have a dress code as it can create a better studying or working atmosphere. I, however, firmly think that having a dress code negatively affect people in companies and schools. The reasons are as follows. To begin with, controlling people's clothing style can influence their academic performance in a negative way. It is a natural fact that people can perform in a highest efficiency and effectiveness when they put the most comfortable clothes and shoes on. However, if companies or schools have a dress code, it usually forces uncomfortable clothes such as suits, skirts, and high heels. When people put such clothes and shoes on, they are unlikely to focus on their work in the best condition. For example, last year, I was an intern at one Internet company with a role of computer programming. The company forces female employees to wear high heels. However, I felt so uncomfortable and got tired easily, which prevented me from concentrating on my work. I could write three programs a week, which was worse than my usual performance. Now, I am working in another company with the same role, but I do not have to wear high heels. Here, I can write five programs a week, having much better performance than what I had at the former company. With the rule of wearing high heels, I would fall behind. (GOOD) Moreover, an absence of a dress code can contribute to an increase of people's overall happiness. These days, people have their own unique characteristics and personalities, having pursuing a lot of various different fashion styles. When people can wear what they want at their work or school, they can play their role with greater joy. According to a study conducted by a team of researchers at Stanford University, there was a huge difference in happiness index between two group of employees. One group was consisted of employees working in companies that do not have a dress code, and the other group was made of people whose companies controlled dressing styles. The researchers found out that the former had 1.8 higher happiness index than the latter. In particular, most of the people in the first group could wear even short pants or sport wears in their workplace, which are more comfortable and better at fulfilling their unique characteristics. As this study shows, people can enjoy their lives better when they do not have to follow rules of clothing. To sum up, I strongly believe that not having a dress code in companies and schools is beneficial to people since it can contribute to their academic performance and overall happiness. All in all, the negative effect of controlling one's dressing style cannot be overestimated.
