Undoubtedly, universities' funding play a significant role in
people's daily lives in many of the places where they play or work. Some people
think that universities should spend more money on infrastructure and physical
plant than keeping the faculty satisfied, while others do not. If I had to
choose one, I would say that it is better for universities to invest money in
infrastructure or sports facility more than in faculty. There are several
reasons as follows.
To
begin with, investing in physical plant or infrastructure for students can
contribute to their physical health. When their bodies heat up, the bodies can
generate more white blood cells. An increase in white blood cells is likely to
improve their immune system, which is very valuable than most of other things.
For example, Tokyo University found a huge difference between two groups of
young in their physical health. One group consisted of those who had spent more
than two hours a week exercising in physical plant and the other group made up
of those who had not. The researchers found out that the first group was more
likely to have normal weight without serious adult diseases than the second
group. In particular, the former tended to have a high resistance to adult
diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and fatty liver diseases. This implies
that offering good environment to do exercise is the key to maintain healthy in
life.
On
top of that, when university invests money in physical plant, it contributes an
increase in their overall happiness. When their bodies heat up and sweat, their
muscle can be relaxed by humidity and heat. When the strained muscles are
relieved, they are likely to improve their mental health. For instance, my
youngest brother often depressed when he was in high school. He thought his
life became an exhausting routine because he spent the whole day studying all
academic subjects hoping he could outdo others. He could deal with such
pressure and strain by a safe way exercising in his University's excellent
sports facility which had been renovated a few months ago. By doing this, he
could forget about worries from his school works, and feel much better about
himself. In particular, he showed a stronger passion in his tasks, a longer
attention span, and a better ability to relay gratification. If university had
spent money on faculty's satisfaction, he would have fallen behind and would
not have been able to escape his blue days.
All
things considered, the advantages of spending more money on physical plant or
infrastructure for students far outweigh those of investing in keeping
faculties' satisfaction. All in all, the importance of students' health cannot
be overestimated in the pursuit of wise budget management. |
