Although the author of the reading
passage argues that the rafting theory is not convincing, the speaker brings up
several points to contradict this argument.
First of all, the speaker argues that
animals could reach Madagascar accidentally. In a study, scientists proved that four ancestor species were responsible for such various genetic compositions. Although
it is hard to believe that many pairs of animals arrive at Madagascar at the
same time, 4 times were enough to propagate thousands of descendants for million
years. This contradicts the passage’s argument that it would be impossible for
the mammals to reach Madagascar accidentally.
Secondly, the professor contends that
the claim related to the current has flaws. This is because Madagascar was located further south when the animals crossed the sea, which is different from one in today. Also, scientists found out that the sea flowed towards East
where Madagascar was located in the past. This goes against the author’s claim that stream flowing
opposite made it impossible for animals to reach Madagascar.
The final point made by the lecturer
is that mammals could survive without much food when floating. This is because
they could adjust their metabolism through torpor. They could slow down their heart
rate and lower their body temperature, so they would not need much nutrients. This
refutes the writer’s claim that mammals could not endure their lives without
food for a long time.
