Some people might think that it is more beneficial to do several tasks at once than one at a time. However, in my opinion, it is rather more inefficient for two following reasons, and thus concentrating on only one task at once. To begin with, if a person focus on one task at a time, he can end up the work faster. Since human being’s cognitive resources have limitation, so it is imperative to invest all resources to one work in order to complete it fast. However, if a person worked several tasks at once, his intellectual source would be dispersed. As a result, input resources per a task cannot be help but decrease, and total time necessary to finish the works would increase more. In this regard, I will take an example of myself. Last semester, I was so busy to complete many tasks from several subjects. So, in order to save my time, I did assorted tasks simultaneously. However, in that situation, I could not worked efficiently. This because it was hard to focus on a task fully since I was necessary to consider myriad aspects of different tasks at once. As a consequence, I could not finish the works fast. On top of that, concentrating one task at a time helps people reduce errors. To be specific, if a person did several tasks simultaneously, the possibility of error would be higher since he might confuse the works which are different from each other. As a result, overall quality of the works would be deteriorated due to some errors or it would be necessary to have more total time in order to complete the whole works because he should correct the errors. I know this from my experience. When I worked as a researcher in a hospital, I had to search information related with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, and write reports that explained about two psychiatric disorders in terms of their treatment. At that time, I had no sufficient time, so I decided to write them at once. However, I made a lot of errors in the process. This is because I confused about them while searching each information, and could not concentrate on a task fully. For example, I wrote some characteristics of bipolar on the report of schizophrenia. Thus, it was natural that the quality of the reports was lower. In conclusion, doing tasks at a time would be helpful to decrease errors and to complete tasks faster. In this regard, I firmly believe that it is better to focus on one task at a time rather than to do several works at once. |
