Some people think that young people these days do not spend enough time to
helping their communities, while others do not. Both sides have their own
reasons to support their views. However, in my opinion, young people nowadays
do not give adequate time to helping their communities. There are several
reasons as follows.
To begin with, today's school education focuses on students'
academic performance too much. To survive in a competitive world, students tend
to spend the whole day studying all academic subjects, hoping they could outdo
others. Considering the fact that an the unemployment
rate has increased rapidly, students cannot help but to concentrate on their
study more than ever. Thus, the importance of helping their communities has
reduced. For instance, many research teams, including the
Tokyo research center, analyzed data from 600 high schools. The researchers
found that the amount of time students volunteer had decreased over the past 20 years. They also checked that the amount
of students' studying time per week had increased gradually. This study implies
that students do not spend enough time helping their communities, but only focusing on their studies.
On top of that, due to the invention and spread of the
information technology, young people can donate their money through many
websites of volunteering community. This trend is likely to make them think
they can help the unfortunate or the homeless very effectively. In other words,
they can donate for poor people who get into
serious trouble with one mouse click by using the internet. It means they can
feel a sense of satisfaction without devoting themselves to helping their
community firsthand. For example, my youngest
sister used to help her church community. She spent her weekend serving food
for the homeless who visited her church. However, after many web sites which
were equipped with many guidelines to help the poor appeared, she stopped
volunteering in her church. Instead of going to church, she simply donated her
money to the people listed on the websites, because she thought that the people on websites lived in more inferior
environments than those who visited her church. As a result, this reduced the amount of
time in helping her community.
All in all, I believe that due to the
development of internet technology and competitive job seeking, this trend will
continue and pass down to the next generation.
