Some people may argue that group project makes students learn effectively. However, I have a different idea. I think that project progressing with others is not effectual.
First of all, sharing ideas during a project makes students waste lots of time. In order to share their opinion and ideas, they have to meet many times. This is because, each members has different ideas about same topic and different schedule, it makes them difficult to coincide their opinions. Therefore the project with other students cannot be finished easily and quickly. It makes students study inefficiently. For example, in Korea, many students do not want to attend classes that require group assignments. They already do numerous assignment in other classes, so they do not have time to meet and discussion with others. It is better for them to study single-handed for saving time.
Also, doing project with other students could be unfair for students who become one team with free riders. In school, many teams are made randomly, so there often are some free riders. In the team including some students who do not working hard, others have to finish the project themselves. However, all teams are received a same grade in class, so it is not fair for them. Finally, no one tries hard studying because anyway they will get a same grade with others who study hard. For instance, when I was a college student, I attended a business class. The professor gave an assignment that we could do individual or group. All students chose doing the assignment by themselves. This is because, if they became a team with a free rider, they could get a lower grade and it would affect their GPA, which makes them difficult to get a good job in the future.
To sum up, the group project is a inefficient method of studying for students, because it is unfair for some students and makes many students waste lots of time. |
