▶ Your Answer :
It is controversial over whether genetically modification of trees has positive effects on human and environment or not. The reading passage insists that planting modified tress has a great positive effect on our planet and human by providing three pieces of evidence. On the other hand, the professor counters the reading passage's argument by offering three compelling rebuttals. (Make it concise)
To begin with, the speaker argues that genetically modified plants are not necessary to survive in any harsh situation. That is because the plants are not designed to have an immune system to all of the disease and dangerous situations. Let me assume a situation that genetically modified plant only developed a specific insects, but they shared uniform genetic properties. If a new kind of pest occurred in that area, they would be in danger of a catastrophic situation in which they were wiped out. This casts doubt about reading passage's contention that genetically modified trees have a better immune system, so they could survive in a perilous situation for them.
Next, the lecturer contends that there are also hidden costs on to planting genetically modified trees. The seeds of modified trees are produced by a company. To get profits, the price of the modified seeds would be much more expensive than that of natural seeds. Moreover, by a law, consumers should pay for each of plants. This contradicts the reading passage's argument that planting genetically modified trees can also grant economical benefits to people, since they produce much more products such as fruits and vegetables rather than naturally grown trees do.
Finally, the professor insists that genetically modified plants also have a negative effect on the local wild plants. The modified plants have a great capacity to grow aggressively, so they can consume all the resources plants need to grow such as water and nutrition in soil. Thus the wild plants would die off due to the genetically modified trees. This challenges the reading passage's suggestion that planting genetically modified plants also has benefits to wild trees, because they can save the wild trees, especially endangered species, by cutting down for firewood or building timber instead.
