Opinions might be divided whether
universities should invest their budget in infrastructure and physical plant or
in keeping the faculty satisfied. People of various ages and from different
walks of life may take diverse positions on this controversial issue. Some
believe that having the faculty members contended with their workplace is much
more important than in investing in infrastructure for universities. However,
if we take a closer look at their, it is reasonable to subsidize their budget
on infrastructure and physical plant.
To begin with, making the building and
facilities better would make all the people related to universities satisfied
with them. I think that the amount of money given to them is not all the thing.
The environment of studying and working is one of the most important factors to
affect a feeling of
satisfaction. When I was a freshman, my university decided to rebuild
most of the facilities because it was worn out. At first, student union
objected the policy because they would be uncomfortable during the construction
and remodeling. However, after the completion of the remodeling, all the people
related to the university were satisfied with the remodeled infrastructure. The
building became clean and convenient for students and faculty. Moreover, many
facilities were in a short before the rebuilding. But after the reconstruction,
most of the facilities became enough for students and faculty to enjoy these
buildings. The same situation can apply to those which invest in infrastructure
and physical plant rather than in other field.
On top of that, universities is not only
educational institutions, but also research institutions. If the infrastructure
to study and research on their own projects is improved and developed greatly,
so do the quality and the achievement of research and studies. A few weeks ago,
I had a chance to read an article which was related to the topic. It described
the result of an assessment of universities in Korea, and Seoul National
Universities was evaluated as the most prestigious university in Korea. The
article added that the assessment was done in a criteria of the performance and
achievement in research area. They went on to say that the reason they could
get high scores in the assessment was that they had invested in infrastructure
for professors' laboratories. The refined and cutting-edge equipment and
well-developed research environment also supported the result of research. This
clearly proves that investing in infrastructure has much more benefits than in
satisfying the faculty members.
As I mentioned above, based on my personal
example and the article, I can conclude that making an investment in
infrastructure has much more advantages than doing in satisfying the faculty
