Both
the reading and the lecture talks about why people yawn. The reading
suggests three possible reasons for it,; however, the lecturer disagrees with those reasons.
The reading firstly mentions that
people yawn for a way of communicating which can show nervousness, boredom, or
stress to other people. The lecture claims that this is not acceptable because
people often yawn when they are alone. If you are alone, you do not have
someone to communicate with, so you should not yawn following to the reading passage.
Also, people try to cover them yawning in front of people at the office. If you
are trying to express your condition, you should not cover it.
The reading claims that people yawn to
equalize pressure of the ears with the atmosphere. The lecturer disagrees with
this statement because there are not enough evidences. On top of that, if what
the reading mentioned is truth, the situations of yawning are extremely
limited; however, people yawn all the times in any situations.
Lastly, the reading says that
people yawn to increase alertness, especially from sleeping. The lecturer
states that it is not convincing, because people usually yawn before they fall
asleep. Besides, instead of waking up the brain by yawning like it mentioned in
the reading passage, it has a relaxing effect by moving facial muscles.
To sum
up, the reading mentions three possible reasons why people yawn, and the
lecture totally disagrees with those possibilities.
