In the reading passage, the writer asserts
that online courses are valuable. On the other hands, the professor refutes the
writer’s assertion by adducing survey results.
In
the first place, the professor points out that in an online course students can
have too much freedom based on the absence of limitation. We can hardly find explicit
disciplines in an online course, so most of students do not consider the course
seriously. They often drop the course without consideration, or do not pay
attention while taking the class. On top of that, it is next to impossible to
take standardized test and control cheating, which are needed to evaluate
students. This casts doubt on the writer’s claim that online courses are
advantageous because they are free from constraints of time and distance.
Conversely, the fact that being free from the constraints is turned out to be
disadvantages.
In
the second place, the professor states that there is not enough interaction
between students and professor, or among students. The problem is that the
professor who takes responsibility of an online course cannot wait in front of
a computer to answer all the questions from the students. Additionally, it is
nearly impossible to answer a complicated question through online, which is
easier in person. So, different from what people have known, responding to all
questions from the students is actually limited by time. This contradicts the writer's claim that teacher can have enough time to respond each student devoting more to individual students. |
