Both the writer and the speaker are talking about the extinction of Stellar's Sea Cow. On the one hand, the text said that it disappeared because of three reasons; overhunting by a lot of native Siberian people, severe competition for food supply and hunting by European fur traders. However on the other hand, the professors refutes it with the statement that these theories are unreasonable for several reasons with following reasons.
First of all, the author states that tremendous hunting by many native Siberian people made this species extincted. In contrast, the lecturer contradicts this statement because the Stellar's Sea Cow was too huge to hunt a lot, especially its size is 9 meters and weighs more than 10 tons.
Secondly, according to the text, one of the main reasons why the species disappeared is overwhelmed competition for getting their foods. To the contrary, the professors rebuts this idea with the reason that humans did not hunt the otters that much and there were a lot of predators of sea urchins excluding them.
Last but not least, the writer argues that because of the European fur traders' hunting the Stellar's Sea Cow was extincted. However, the speaker says it is not reliable because they came to the islands long after it has disappeared. What I mean is that none of them exists at the time they arrived at the islands so it does not make any sense.
