▶ Your Answer : Grades can act as an approximate mark of how well students
understand the subject. I admit that good grades might encourage students to
study hard;, however, in my opinion, grades have more negative effects on
students than positive effects. ^
To begin with, creativity can be lost in pursuit of good
grades. It is well illustrated in the survey of the way to get A+ recently
conducted by Seoul National University students, which found that students with
good grades just try to satisfy professor's appetite. They record the lecture,
study with it, and write the answers which is exactly the same as what
professor said. This demonstrates the lack of passion for learning can
nevertheless result in good grade if one has some tips of getting it. In this
case, grades are not encouraging students to learn, but forcing students to
earn them in the wrong way. ^
On top of that, it occurs more often that grades disparage
students. In Korea, the 3rd grade students in high school study hard to get
admission to a good college. Almost all of them do not don't do anything but studying
the same things over and over again for SAT. While studying it, they lose
interest in subjects and get tired of learning something. To give an another
instance, one of my friends had a real passion for mathematics. Among my
classmates who were unwillingly studying math to get good grades, he was the only
one exploring math with joy. However, he was not good at taking exams well
since getting good score on exams needs strategies such as using time
efficiently and not making mistakes. At every exams, he felt depressed and
doubted his ability. As my experience shows, grades have a danger to discourage
students with passion. ^
In conclusion, I think grades are not a good means to
energize students to study since it is likely to deprive students of creativity
and passion.
