▶ Your Answer :
The reading
passages contends that Carbon Dioxide could be reduced by various ways.
However, the lecturer brings about several points that contradict this
argument.
First of all,
the speaker argues that adding to iron rarely helps increase the number of
phytoplankton, which can absorb Carbon Dioxide. It is evident that these organisms use up
nitrogen; the population decreases again even though iron is multiplied in the
ocean, so that a number of phytoplankton grows up. This casts doubt on the reading, which states that growing the phytoplankton by adding iron to the oceans
results in reducing the amount of Carbon Dioxide.
According to the
lecturer, artificial wetlands is ineffective method to sequester Carbon Dioxide. It is
obvious that the storage capacity of artificial wetland is much less than the
natural swamp. Moreover, if artificial wetland fully functions, it will take
forever. This refutes the reading passage’s assertion that the artificial
wetland is another potential method to sequester Carbon Dioxide.
The
final point made by the lecturer was on the unused coal mines causing a problem to retain Carbon Dioxide.. This is because using fossil-fuel power plants produces methane, which
contain carbon as well. In addition, not all the Carbon Dioxide is not attached to coal. Thus,
it will leak out into atmosphere rather than reducing Carbon Dioxide in the ground. This
counters the writer’s claim that Carbon Dioxide can be owned in some abandoned coal mines.
