In the reading passage, there is ample support for the author's claim that there are conceivable explanations for the red rain. However, the professor in the lecture gives several reasons as a rebuttal to the author's point.
First, the professor contends that the theory that the red rain was caused by the bat blood is far-fetched. If this was the truth, millions of bats must have died simultaneously. This is highly unlikely to be happened. Moreover, there were not any remnants of the death of bats like wings and bones of bats. This casts doubts on the reading passage's claim that the reason of the red rain is bat blood. Next, the professor insists that the theory that the volcanic eruption caused the red rain is unproven. The red rain phenomenon took place only in Kerala. However, considering that the acidic clouds move, the red rain should have been occurred in Philippines too. In addition, the red rain did not occurred in any of other countries between Philippines and India. This counters the reading passage's assertion that the eruption of Mountain Mayon is the cause of the red rain.
Finally, the professor argues that the theory that the chemical pollution caused the red rain is not true. In fact, there were few factories in India, so the conjecture that contamination is a conclusive reason for the red rain is improper. Moreover, the red rain was not discovered in the local chimneys. This refutes the reading passage's suggestion that the pollutants of local factories are the reason of the red rain.
